Fount Vice, New - V40

Fount Vice, New - V40

SKU: Fount-Vice

This is a non-scratching fount vise, thoughtfully made in the USA and designed to work with nearly all Coleman lanterns and single-burner stoves. It’s a reliable tool that’s meant to last forever.

The vise comes with a metal plate you can mount it directly to your workbench for a stable setup. Alternatively, there’s a vise mount you can install on the bottom, so you can easily put it away when you’re finished using it—whatever works best for your space.

It also includes two inserts to adjust the size, making it simple to hold smaller founts like the 242 and 222 models securely.

Will work on these lantern & stove models, and probably more: 200, 200A, 201, 202, 206, 214, 220s, 222, 226, 227, 228s, 229, 231, 234, 235, 236, 237, 238, 242, 243, 246, 247, 249, 252, 275, 285, 286, 290, 295, 327, 331, 335, 339, 351, 427, 500, 502, 508, 621, 635 and 639.

This was a gift from my amazing wife - she went onto some of the Coleman forums and got great ideas from the members - what a nice community of helpful people! This vice is great! In the month I've had it, I've renovated an Air-o-Lantern, two Coleman mil-specs, a 200a and have done minor work on a 228 and a 242. I was skeptical of the need for this vise, but it makes it so easy to work on lanterns I now wonder why I didn't buy this myself years ago. It holds them securely and frees up both hands - my past experience working on 220s/228s is that I frequently needed a third hand - not anymore! I used to flip the founts over and put the valve in a padded vise, but when re-installing the valve I would tighten it, remove from the vise to check clocking, return to vise and adjust, etc, etc. The vice makes it so much faster to immediately get the valve clocked where you want it! Great choice of materials, too - I had seen videos showing how to make DIY vises, but they are usually made of plywood which would be bulkier and harder to store than this vise is.

With all of that said, I would recommend a couple of improvements, either for the manufacturer to implement or for other users to do themselves. First, I use the included brackets to hold this in my vise - that puts the baseplate right about the height of my ribs, and the corners of the baseplate are a sharp 90 degrees. I recommend the manufacturer round the corners, or the user add DIY padding to them. The second thing I did was remove the rings and space them with washers under the rings on all 4 screws. This spaces the ring just a bit off the baseplate, making it easier to adjust.

I highly recommend this vise if you repair or restore lanterns and stoves - you won't believe how much easier this makes it.
